Public Infrastructure

Public infrastructure refers to infrastructure facilities, systems and structures that are developed, owned, and operated by the government. It includes all infrastructure facilities that are open to the general public for use. One way by which to classify types of infrastructure is to view them as two distinct kinds: Hard Infrastructure and Soft Infrastructure. Hard Infrastructure refers to the physical networks necessary for the functioning of a modern industry. Examples include transportation systems, communications networks, sewage, water and electrical systems. These systems tend to be capital intensive and high-cost investments, and are vital to a country’s economic development and prosperity.
